Afrome - The Power of Melanin.
Written by Kui Mwai
Visual artist Britt James is a force of nature who infuses her many interests and signature style to create Afrome. Pronounced Afro-may, this new wave art institution is a refreshing homage to Black beauty— it’s origins, it’s nuances, it’s vivaciousness and it’s pride. Afrome is a world of Blackness, portraying familiar characters like Elsa and Kim Possible “dipped in chocolate”. Her work is rich, and a powerful love letter to Black bodies.
Afrome Boutique features a wide array of products, from iPhone cases to Zodiac-Element cards. Buy prints to add warmth to walls, or cards to show a loved one that you really see them. Each work is purposeful and personable— capturing a Black and/or Brown aesthetic excellence. Afrome embodies the infusion of Afrocentric Imagery, affirmation, anime and fashion illustration.
James published her first coloring book, entitled ONEi, in 2017. Over the years, her reflection and representation of Black and Brown beauty has diversified. From digital products to iPhone cases, Afrome continues to make art that brings awareness to whitewashed history, fights for injustice, and most importantly, provides healing and mental wellness to Black and Brown communities around the world.
